The Chief Parliamentary Counsel works under the policy direction of the Attorney-General and in accordance with Ministerial policies and procedures, to be accountable for the management and implementation of Government's legislative programme, to ensure the provision of a range of professional legislative drafting services and provision of legal advice to Cabinet Ministers, Ministries, Departments and His/Her Excellency the Governor in a timely and efficient manner. The Chief Parliamentary Counsel is accountable for the effective management and administration of the operations of the Legislative Drafting Section, including the financial, human resources and development functions, the maintenance of the legislative database and the revision and maintenance of Bermuda's laws. The Chief Parliamentary Counsel undertakes associated legal and operational duties, as requested by the Attorney General and Permanent Secretary responsible for the Attorney-General's Chambers.

Requirements

A minimum of ten (10) years' relevant post-qualification experience in the drafting of legislation in a Commonwealth jurisdiction is required for the post. This experience must include three (3) years management at a senior level in a legal environment with responsibility for the professional development of staff. The post-holder must be called to the Bar in a Commonwealth jurisdiction. A certificate or diploma in legislative drafting is preferred, or specialized post graduate training is essential.
