Assistant Vice President, Underwriter
Key Duties & Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Conduct underwriting activities including analyzing exposures, coverages and contract language, and evaluating submissions.
• Build and maintain proprietary models relating to Risk, Excess of Loss and Retro for Catastrophe, Marine, Specialty, and other relevant segments.
• Negotiate, price, and execute deals, including managing exposure projections and reinsurance structuring.
• Drive business development. Build Ascot's existing relationships and introduce new client, broker and cedent relationships within relevant markets.
• Work closely with senior management on underwriting matters and demonstrate leadership and technical skill in developing underwriting strategy.
• Perform analytical work and reviews on large data sets.
• Maintain the company's underwriting systems, guidelines and procedures, ensuring all controls and high-quality standards are met.
• Coach, develop, motivate and manage junior underwriting staff.
• Assist the company with other underwriting lines, duties, and ad hoc projects as required.
Minimum Qualifications, Skills and Experience Required:
• Bachelor's degree in mathematics, finance, economics or business administration, or a relevant insurance certification, such as ARE, ARM or CPCU.
• Professional certification in Catastrophe Risk Management Modelling, such as CEEM, CSCR or CCRMP.
• A minimum of 4 years of progressive catastrophe risk underwriting experience, with a focus on exposure management and pricing.
• In-depth Property underwriting experience and capabilities, as well as technical insight in Cat Retro, Cat XOL, Risk XOL, and Risk Retro are required. Additional experience in Risk and Retro for Marine and Specialty lines is preferred.
• Significant experience and a demonstratable high level of technical capability in building out models with developing applications using VBA, Power Query, Power Query M, Power Pivot, Power BI and DAX, JSON/XML, SQL, and Excel add-ins.
• Deep knowledge of relational databases and strong reporting proficiency, with significant experience and ability in graphically representing data using web application programming interface (APIs) under tight deadlines.
• Excellent numeracy and analytical skills, with experience in successfully managing and analyzing large data sets.
• Extensive knowledge of contract terms and demonstrated success in negotiating and pricing deals with brokers.
• Established strong broker and cedent relationships within relevant US and UK markets, with the ability to introduce new, relevant relationships to Ascot.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, along with a solid commercial awareness and strong organization, negotiation and presentation skills.
• An intrinsic drive to continually improve processes and product lines and lead with innovative solutions.
• Ability to work flexible hours to meet business demands and deadlines including evenings, weekends and public holidays.
