The Trainee is accountable for the quality and quantity of analyses performed in the Clinical Laboratory, and the maintenance of instruments/machines used to carry out the tests to ensure safe operations. The Trainee provides accurate, timely and cost effective laboratory testing and procedures of client samples to assist Medical Officers in the diagnosis, monitoring, treatment and prevention of disease in compliance with the quality management system. These tests may include, but are not limited to, chemistry, hematology, immunology, virology and microbiology. Under the direction of the Laboratory Supervisor and Laboratory Technologist, the Trainee will correspond with senior staff to determine the selection of relevant diagnostic test(s) based on signs and symptoms presented by Medical Officers and established algorithms; provide accurate and precise laboratory results; and to present appropriate interpretation of reported results. The decision-making must be based on complex quality control results, equipment maintenance, specimen quality and proper test procedure. The Trainee must be aware of limitations, specificity and sensitivity of methods used to generate results in order to provide relevant results on the patient being tested. The Trainee works collaboratively with the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital clinical laboratory, the Public Health Reference Laboratory of the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), and Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) as needed.

Requirements

The Trainee must possess a Bachelors Degree or equivalent in Medical Laboratory Technology or other relevant field of study (e.g. Clinical or Medical Laboratory Science, Higher National Certificate in Clinical Laboratory Science etc). The Trainee must be registered or eligible for registration with the Council for Allied Health Professionals. The Trainee must have relevant laboratory experience.
