Assistant Underwriter

Reporting to the Head of Casualty, the Assistant Underwriter will work closely with the broader underwriting teams to provide high-quality technical underwriting support. The role provides for great scope to collaborate across the business; however, the primary focus of the role will be within the casualty line of business. Support the underwriting strategy and department processes, including analysis and qualification of risk exposures, coverage and contract language. Develop and assist in managing the production of a profitable reinsurance portfolio. Ability to to develop, implement and articulate a clear proposition for the portfolio, contributing to the underwriting guidelines, governance frameworks and business development protocols. Assist in negotiation of pricing, contract terms and conditions. Supporting cross selling opportunities, working on projects, and collaborating with other lines of business and across regions. Ensure exposures are controlled and remain within in-house parameters, using in-house aggregate exposure management tools and ensuring all risks are recorded in accordance with underwriting documentation procedures. Maintain awareness of changing (re)insurance market conditions to take advantage of new opportunities. Maintain relationships with brokers and strategic accounts assigned by the senior underwriters. Assess the risks of the proposed transactions and produce a report of the risk to convince approvers to accept the risk. Issue non-binding, indicative term sheets to brokers and clients. Produce and present underwriting reports and support with business planning initiatives and claims analysis as prescribed. Maintaining knowledge of key (re)insurance issues and trends. Under the guidance of an underwriter, manage and monitor the underwritten risk, support and guide the Post Contract Management staff in ensuring timely payment of premiums; and following up on any outstanding documentation or information from policyholders. Continuously monitoring the assigned portfolio, pre-empting any potential risk events thereon and promptly bringing such to management's attention. Other ad hoc projects, as required, to support the underwriting function.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree or equivalent designation/experience. A minimum of 3-5 years' experience in insurance or reinsurance, preferably within the Casualty market. A professional industry qualification, or at least progress towards qualification (i.e., ARe, CPCU, ACII). Knowledge of global insurance and reinsurance markets. Must be aware of regional differences in contract coverages and reinsured perils. Excellent technical and computer skills including a high level of proficiency in MS Office suite. Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail. Proven working knowledge of reinsurance contracts and associated market practice. Track record of maintaining strong working relationships with reinsurance brokers and buyers globally. Proven knowledge and ability to create new business opportunities working across casualty market product offerings. Good written and verbal communication, including negotiation, skills and interpersonal skills. Good analytical skills with ability to think strategically and consistently seek opportunities to achieve competitive advantage. Good use of judgement and decision-making skills. Strong work ethic, willing and able to work flexibly as required to meet deadlines or address urgent matters as they arise.
