The Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS), a premier marine research and education institute and a unit of Arizona State University (ASU), is seeking an experienced and motivated Maintenance Technician to join our team. The successful candidate will report to the Facilities Manager. DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES To maintain all buildings with regard to the general upkeep of labs, offices, common areas, housing, etc., and provide support services to the highest possible standards in accordance with the BIOS mission statement. Provide support services in the capacity as a Maintenance Technician – both inside and outside of all buildings, to the specifications of the Facilities Manager. This includes the installation and repair of plumbing, electrical work, carpentry, masonry and painting. Assisting with other general maintenance work. Timely reporting of potentially serious problems, particularly those which will affect safety, service or budget. Ensure that all work is done professionally and in a timely manner. Provide covering or other for protecting surrounding areas and furnishings to ensure they are not damaged when work is being performed. Work areas must be left in a clean state once repairs or work have been completed. In emergencies, be prepared, or take the initiative, to turn out for work at short notice and at unsocial hours. Procuring and storing of tools and maintenance materials under direction from the Facilities Manager. Assisting with other work projects as needed within the Facilities Team (e.g. moving of furniture, driving/unloading the trucks, etc.). Be responsible for filling out their own timesheets. QUALIFICATIONS Must have basic competence and skill across multiple disciplines to include plumbing, electrical, carpentry, minor masonry and painting. Drywall & ceiling experience is an asset but not required. Certification or equivalent in plumbing and electrical work an asset. Minimum 7 years’ professional experience in building and maintenance practices, particularly from a Bermuda perspective, with an emphasis on general maintenance. Demonstrate a good work ethic and willingness to assist or carry out jobs not necessarily related to general maintenance, as required by the Facilities Manager i.e. moving/installing furniture, clean up, loading/unloading truck/van etc., based upon the needs of BIOS. Current, clean, light and intermediate truck driving license required. Have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Basic computer skills required, with the ability to process Microsoft e-mails using a tablet and phone. Be self-motivated, with the ability to work in a professional manner, either unsupervised or as part of the Facilities Team.
