Medical Technologist

The Medical Technologist for Island Health Services Limited (IHSL) will be responsible for performing pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytic phases of laboratory testing procedures from waived to moderate complexity testing. The individual must be committed to maintaining a high level of customer satisfaction, providing accurate and timely results, and following exactly all aspects of testing policies and procedures. This position reports to the Laboratory Manager. Core responsibilities: • Performs phlebotomy • Participates in collection, receipt, documentation, processing, and reporting of all specimens including those referred to other laboratories • Maintains laboratory analyzers and other laboratory equipment by calibrating; completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting; calling for repairs; and maintaining equipment inventories • Reviews quality control results, and follows procedures for controls out of range • Verifies specimens as to their condition, acceptability, and appropriateness for the requested test(s) • Processes specimens utilizing protocols and technical knowledge • Recognizes critical values and reports them promptly to the approved medical personnel • Assists with the accreditation process, proficiency testing, and QA/QC • Assists management with the implementation and design of new laboratory processes • Responsible for accurately completing records and reports • Follows laboratory policy for data retrieval, record keeping, requisition, and reporting procedures • Promotes effective working relationships and works effectively as part of a team inter and intra-departmentally to facilitate the company's ability to meet its goals and objectives • Promotes and maintains good customer service relations • Performs any other duties as directed by the Laboratory Manager

Requirements

Qualifications and experience required: • Bachelor of Science Degree - Medical Technology, Chemistry, Biology or equivalent with one year of clinical training • Minimum of three years of laboratory experience with two of those years as a Generalist • Minimum of one year of phlebotomy experience • ASCP, AAB, AIMS, or equivalent board certification • Must be registered with the Bermuda Health Council as an MT (Medical Technologist) • Proficient in phlebotomy, areas of chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, and point-of care-testing • CPR trained • Sound knowledge of lab testing and quality control policies and procedures • Demonstrated knowledge regarding laboratory accreditation requirements and HIPAA • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office, using lab information systems and electronic medical records • Proficiency in the use of Laboratory equipment, testing, and troubleshooting • Possess excellent patient service, communication, and interpersonal skills • Ability to communicate effectively in English, with a diverse set of people, both verbally and in writing • Ability to work independently or as part of a team, multitask, and work well under pressure
