Senior Medical Lab Technologist

The Senior Medical Lab Technologist for Island Health Services Limited (IHSL) will be responsible for supervising all lab and diagnostic operations including managing workflow, scheduling staff and ensuring timely completion of lab tests. The Senior Medical Lab Technologist reports to the Laboratory Manager. Core responsibilities: Recruit, train, and supervise lab and diagnostic personnel including technologists, administrators, and sonographers Ensure compliance with all lab regulations and safety protocols per COLA and Accreditation Canada requirements Participate in collection, receipt, documentation, processing and reporting of all specimens including those referred to other labs Implement quality control measures and conduct regular audits and proficiency testing Coordinate maintenance and calibration of lab instruments to ensure accurate results Collaborate with health professionals, senior phlebotomists, physicians, and external stakeholders to ensure effective communication of lab results to patients Identify and mitigate potential risks and hazards in the lab as required Develop and implement emergency protocols to protect staff and patients Promote and maintain good patient service standards Perform phlebotomy and ECG testing as required Create and update competency assessments for all staff annually as required Create, update and review policies and procedures annually for lab and diagnostic services Address patient complaints and concerns regarding lab and diagnostic services Perform any other duties as directed by the Laboratory Manager Qualifications and experience required: Doctoral, Master's, or Bachelor's degree in laboratory science and one year laboratory training or experience in high-complexity testing Minimum of five years of experience in lab operations with a minimum of three years supervising or leading staff within healthcare ASCP, CSMLS, AIMS or NZIMLS registration Membership in a relevant statutory body Previous leadership or management position within healthcare Qualified as testing personnel for high-complexity testing and at least two years laboratory training or experience in high-complexity testing Sound knowledge of lab testing and quality control procedures CPR trained Proficient in using lab information systems, electronic medical records, and Microsoft Suite (e.g. Labdaq, IMS) Proficiency in the use of point-of-care and ECG equipment, testing, and troubleshooting Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory tests Demonstrated knowledge regarding laboratory accreditation requirements and HIPAA Possess excellent patient service, communication, and interpersonal skills. Ability to communicate effectively in English, with a diverse set of people, both verbally and in writing Ability to work independently or as part of a team, multitask, and work well under pressure.
