Privacy Commissioner For Bermuda

The Government of Bermuda invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for the post of Privacy Commissioner. The Office of the Privacy Commissioner is an independent office that ensures individuals have control over all their personal information in Bermuda (in both public and private sectors) and how it is used. It also plays a major role in the development of Bermuda's cybersecurity framework, and contributes towards the further development of a successful digital economy. The Privacy Commissioner operates under the authority of the Personal Information and Protection Act 2016 (PIPA) to ensure compliance with the Act and that the purposes of the Act are being achieved. The Privacy Commissioner will be responsible for undertaking reviews and investigations, providing reports and developing public awareness and guidance in relation to the rights of individuals, and the obligations of organisations, under PIPA. For this critically important role, we need an outstanding individual, who has a comprehensive knowledge of data protection and privacy law and its operation as well as a strong familiarity with information and communication technologies and data processing methods and the privacy issues that can arise from their use. A minimum of ten years of relevant experience in privacy/data protection or a related field, including five years in a senior level management position. Candidates should hold a Master's degree in Law, Public Administration, Management, Political Science or relevant subject matter along with a practical qualification in data protection and privacy such as the Practitioner Certificate in Data Protection, Certified Information Privacy Professional or Certified Information Privacy Manager, or a similar qualification. Consideration will also be given to candidates with a minimum of twelve years of relevant experience in privacy/data protection or a related field, including six years in a senior level management position. They must also hold a Master's degree in Law, Public Administration, Management, Political Science or relevant subject matter along with a practical qualification in data protection and privacy such as the Practitioner Certificate in Data Protection, Certified Information Privacy Professional or Certified Information Privacy Manager, or a similar qualification. As well as these technical skills, the successful must also have the ability to command the respect of both local and international stakeholders, maintain appropriate networks and establish effective relationships and an appreciation for the complexities and sensitivities associated with this position in a small jurisdiction. The appointment will be for an initial period of five (5) years and may be reappointed for a further period of five (5) years.
