Nursing Associate

This post provides respectful personal and basic clinical care; practical and emotional support to elders, enabling the elders to direct their own care needs and maintain a positive quality of life within the limits of their health status. Duties include, but are not limited to: Keeps elders clean and provides personal care and assistance for assigned elders. Gives morning and evening care, including baths (bed, shower or tub), shampoo, oral care, shave, nail care and hair care. Assists professional nursing staff in providing care to elders of the facility. Understands personal responsibilities with regard to Health & Safety legislation and raises any health and safety concerns to management. Gains consent before beginning any treatment. Provides special attention to immobile elders, treating pressure areas, massaging when necessary, and performing passive range of motion exercises. Assists elders to bathroom, gives bedpans and urinals as required Ambulates, gives backrubs, exercises, and repositions. Also assists elders in and out of chairs, wheelchairs and beds in accordance with Health & Safety regulations. Keeps elders rooms neat and orderly, changes beds, provides clean linen as required. Executes the tasks detailed in the elder's care and support plan using a person centred approach. Receives elders' reports and assignments at the beginning of each shift, and reports on progress of assigned elders. Manages common behavioural challenges of Alzheimer and dementia elders: e.g. purposeful wandering; agitation and aggression; catastrophic reaction; combativeness; delusions/hallucinations/paranoia; sexual behavior, sun downing etc. Utilizes specific techniques acquired in specialized training when dealing with combative Alzheimer's or dementia elders. Calls for assistance if individual becomes volatile. Demonstrates sensitivity and communicates with Alzheimer and dementia elders in a manner appropriate to their needs. Supports therapeutic interventions and specialized techniques for responding to Alzheimer and dementia. Maintains work sheet and detailed accurate written records on assigned Record keeping reflects response to treatment, companionship, spontaneity and purpose. Maintains confidentiality of information and not divulge information to anyone who is not authorized to receive it. Maintains quality assurance records as directed. Reports and records all accidents and incidents on established occurrence form. Promptly records and reports abuse or suspected abuse. Reports and records all accidents and incidents on established occurrence Directs visitors, explains restrictions, visiting hours. Participates in the activities programme and promotes social interaction between elders, their families and staff. Escorts elders to the hospital and/or their health care provider for treatment and to other activities as required. Works in a manner that facilitates inclusion, particularly of people with dementia and Alzheimer's. Attends required meetings and participates in other activities as directed by the Nursing Coordinator. Performs related and allied duties as directed by the Nurse, Nursing Coordinator and/or Administrator. Maintains skills and knowledge base through participation in in-service and continuing education programes as documented through the performance appraisal process. Observes all health and safety rules and takes reasonable care to promote the health and safety of self and other inclusive of fire safety and evacuation procedures.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications and Experience: Certificate in Nursing Assistant or equivalent. Must be registered or eligible for registration as a Nurse Associate with the Bermuda Nursing and Midwifery Council. A minimum of 1 year's relevant experience working with the elderly in a residential care facility or other relevant environment is required. Required Competencies, Skills and Abilities: • Uses effective verbal and written communication, and a high level of listening skills so as to understand the needs and feelings of elders. • Utilizes Interpersonal skills to develop personal relationships with elders, their families and Colleagues. • Possesses strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize duties, multi-task, and effect excellent time management skills. • Ability to advocate for elders and their needs, and for own self-development. • Flexible in handling workload, e.g. adjust to changes in schedule, roster, assigned elders, team etc. • Flexible in handling diverse scenarios e.g. recognizes triggers of anti-social/combative behavior of elders and assists colleagues in the event of an episode, identifies cause of problem and acts to prevent reoccurrence, etc. • Can work cooperatively with others throughout the organization to achieve organizational goals, and contributes to the professional and environment sharing of abilities and tasks among staff. • An understanding of and ability to interact with and care for elders displaying combative behaviors due to dementia or Alzheimer's. • Aware of and recognizes elder abuse and neglect. • Experience in report writing and record keeping and ability to maintain detailed, accurate records in respect of personal and clinical care of elders. • Ability to offer personal care and basic clinical skills. • Knowledge of Residential care and Nursing Homes Regulations 2000, Residential care and Nursing Homes Act 2001, and the Elder Abuse Registry Act 2008. • Ability to work in a computerized environment with basic knowledge and use of the Microsoft Office Suite of products.
