The Medical Technologist-Histology is responsible for processing, embedding and sectioning surgical, autopsy, cellblock, bone marrow and trephine biopsy specimens. Additionally, the Medical Technologist assists the Pathologist with cutting and dictation of surgical specimens as well as performing routine, special and immunohistochemical stains.

Main Duties:

• Performs clinical laboratory testing on patient specimens using equipment, which has been quality, controlled and maintained according to manufacturers’ guidelines.
• Produces results for diagnosis, prevention or treatment of disease.
• Operates and maintains the department’s equipment in a safe and efficient manner (eg. LH750, Vitros 5600s, Swing/Saxo, Bactec, etc.). Performs calibrations and quality controls and reports variations from acceptable limits to the Senior Technologist.
• Reports and documents in the LIS abnormal or panic results to the appropriate physician/ward.
• Prepares blood for transfusion (eg. pre-op, emergency, etc.).
• Look up, fax and call results and answer inquiries from the wards or doctors’ offices.
• Inform seniors of any instrument or supply problems or shortages.
• Performs and monitors outpatients during the phlebotomy procedure.
• Orders/accessions patient’s tests in the LIS verifying the patient’s name, chart number and date of birth to insure validity of the specimen.
• Completes all work from the previous shift.
• Print and review a pending log at the end of each shift to insure all work is completed.
• Maintain a clean and tidy work environment and follows prescribed infection control practices.
• Resolves minor complaints from clients, carers and visitors and pass on serious complaints in accordance with departmental/BHB policy.
• File requisitions, discards specimens, complete on-line file clean-up (OFC), insure reports are printing, according to departmental policies.
• Perform any other related duties assigned by the Lab Manager or Senior Technologist.
