Working in Bermuda: Work Permits & Job Categories

⚠️ IMPORTANT NOTICE: This guide is for informational purposes only and does not constitute legal, financial or immigration advice. Relocating to Bermuda involves complex statutory requirements that change frequently. Always verify specific details with the Government of Bermuda or a qualified Bermuda-based professional before making financial or legal commitments.

Securing a job in Bermuda is only half the battle. To legally reside and work on the island, you must navigate the Department of Immigration's permit landscape. Whether you are a specialized actuary or a fintech founder, the type of permit you hold dictates your legal rights, your ability to bring family, and your long-term career flexibility.

Common Work Permit Pathways

Most professionals in International Business (IB) enter the island under one of these four types of work permits:

1. Standard Work Permit

The baseline for most hires. It requires the employer to prove no qualified local was available by advertising the role for 8 days. Permits are typically issued for 1–5 years. NDon't let a missing document stall your application. Get the 2026 Relocation & Work Permit Checklist and ensure your FBI checks and medicals are ready before the employer even hits 'submit'.

2. Intra-Company Transfer

For those transferring within a global firm (e.g., PwC, AXA). In 2026, transfers with a gross salary over $125k often bypass the local advertising requirement.

3. New Business & Fintech Permits

Designed for startups. New companies can often receive automatic approval for their first set of permits without advertising to help them hit the ground running.

4. Global Entrepreneur Permit

A 1-year "scouting" permit for founders to live in Bermuda while raising capital or seeking BMA regulatory approvals. No local advertising is required.

Understanding Job Classifications

The Department of Immigration classifies all roles into levels that determine who can apply.

Open Job Category

Most professional roles (ex: finance, IT). No application restrictions.

Special Job Category

Roles with extra licensing (ex: hospital nurses, restaurant staff, child-care givers).

Restricted Job Category

High local supply (ex: administrative assistants, bank teller, commercial cleaner). Harder for expats to secure.

Closed Job Category

Reserved for locals only (ex: taxi drivers, office receptionists, general labourers).

Sponsored Dependents (Bringing Your Family)

Bermuda is welcoming to families, but your "Base Salary" must meet specific 2026 thresholds to sponsor a spouse or children.

2026 Minimum Base Salary Requirements

  • 1 Dependent: $60,000
  • 2 Dependents: $100,000
  • 3 Dependents: $125,000
Note: "Base Salary" excludes bonuses and housing allowances. Meeting these numbers is critical for permit approval.

Critical Restrictions to Know

The Two-Year Rule

First-time work permit holders are generally expected to stay with their initial employer for 24 months. Attempting to switch jobs before this mark requires a personal waiver from the Minister of Immigration.

Promotion Cooling-Off Periods

In Bermuda, a promotion is a legal change in your permit conditions. Even if you excel, there are mandatory waiting periods (up to 12 months) before a promotion can be processed.

Navigating Your Employment Contract

Before you sign, you need to recognize the financial exposure buried in your relocation contract. Clauses like 'Repayment Clawbacks' can leave you owing $30k+ if the job isn't a fit, especially when combined with Immigration's 2-year restriction on changing employers.
