Executive Claims Specialist - Professional Liability

Markel Bermuda Limited, a subsidiary of Markel Corporation, has an opening for an Executive Claims Specialist-Professional Liability. This position will be the acknowledged technical expert and be responsible for the resolution of high complexity and high exposure claims. The position will have significant responsibility for decision making and work autonomously within their authority. Duties and Responsibilities: • Confirms coverage of claims by reviewing policies and documents submitted in support of claims. Analyzes coverage and communicates coverage positions. • Conducts, coordinates, and directs investigation into loss facts and extent of damages. • Evaluates information on coverage, liability, and damages to determine the extent of insured's exposure. • Sets reserves within authority or makes claim recommendations concerning reserve changes to manager. • Negotiates and settles claims either directly or indirectly. • Promotes the growth and development of less experienced claims specialist and fosters and energized work environment; leads others through change. • Provides technical expertise/training to subordinates, underwriters and external resources. • Reviews and approves coverage letters, reports and authority requests. • Participates in large cross-departmental special projects and/or product development initiatives. May serve as project leader. • Participates in mediations, settlement conferences, trials, and industry conferences. • Provides strategic advice to underwriting and represents Markel at external panels and industry forums. • Pulls and analyses loss information for senior business stakeholders and presents during monthly/quarterly business meetings. • Recommends changes to claims guidelines and best practice procedures. • Assumes managerial duties when manager is away/unavailable or requires assistance. Qualifications, Education and/or Experience: • Bachelor's Degree required. • Master's Degree and/or certificate/diploma within insurance is preferred. • Minimum of 10 years of successful claims handing experience including specific experience handling complex claims across a range of PL product lines, including E&O, D&O, EPL and Transactional Liability. • Market leading specialist knowledge within Professional Liability. • Expert policy language skills enabling accurate and consistent policy wording interpretation. • Experience identifying and presenting on claims trends and future exposures. • Experience in negotiation, mediation and/or arbitrations. • Ability to manage claims outside of local jurisdiction where appropriate, including understanding of laws and regulations. Strong senior stakeholder management experience, both internal (underwriting, distribution, actuarial, finance and executive management) and external (brokers, major account clients). • Ability to influence claims stakeholders and to effectively direct claims strategy. • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office products (Excel, Outlook, Power Point, Word). • Ability to work in a team environment.

Requirements

Bachelor's Degree required. Master's Degree and/or certificate/diploma within insurance is preferred.
